Another Great Video: 2008 Monaco Gran Prix Historique by Alex King

tjrubley | Automotive | Thursday, October 30th, 2008 | del.icio.us

I absolutely love this clip from Alex King. His coverage of the 2008 Monaco Gran Prix Historique in this video is wonderfully shot and edited. The Stone’s tune in the background is also a great pairing.

“Can’t You Hear Me Knocking” Revised Teaser from alex king on Vimeo.

I find myself watching this video all the time and had to share it. Check out his other videos too for some cool slow-motion rally footage.

Got a favorite online clip you’d like to share? Let’s make page of great videos in the comments. Post the link and I’ll embed them all in a new post next week.

1973 Mazda RX-3 For Sale in New Jersey

tjrubley | Automotive, Online Classifieds Car Show | Monday, October 27th, 2008 | del.icio.us

When was the last time you saw a nice looking RX-3 for sale that wasn’t a race car? Not in the last decade at least for me… Maybe Paul will leave a comment with a humorous little tale from our college days when we last inquired about an RX-3 ;)

Here’s an RX-3 survivor for sale on the east coast for $7900 that I spotted on VWVortex:

quote from seller’s post:

it is a 1973 mazda rx-3 2dr. fastback blackwith black interior. it is powered a a 13-b rotory motor street ported with race beat intake, race beat header, holly carb, exhaust and muffler. this thing sounds real mean. backed by a 4 speed trans with race clutch, battery relocated to truck with an alluminum fuel cell in the trunk, electric fuel pump with electric cooling fan as well. has fiber glass fenders and hood with hood pins. lowered about 1.5 inches via race springs in the front and blocks in the back. has heavy duty front sway bar and posi rear. very very sharp car and very fast to boot. gonna take it to e-town tonight to see what it can do. lots of mods and very sharp. asking $7900 or best cash offer will consider partial or full trades for a really nice v-dub.

I know I haven’t seen one of these for sale in quite a long time and this one is in reasonable and drivable condition. The 13B upgrade and performance accessories certainly sweeten the deal and guarantee this is a little screamer.

But $7900 seems crazy to me because I think you could fetch a far better first generation RX-7 for that kind of money. It’s not like the RX-3 set the world on fire like the seven did, so I have a hard time giving it this kind of billing. But the seller is on the east coast, and it’s probably been 20 years since anyone has seen one this decent in salt country.

Regular readers will note that I took a little break from blogging this past weekend. Work has been kicking my ass and the weather was really nice here in the Willamette Valley this past weekend. So I unplugged and decompressed, enjoying the weather and quiet. As such I’ll be getting the updates from GermanCarsForSaleBlog and RareSportBikesForSale out a bit late. But follow the links now and be ahead of the curve if need be - there’s some good stuff in there. And I’ll be doing a writeup of a recent interview with the previous owner of this 82 Porsche 911 Turbo modified by DP Motorsports, which has was owned earlier by Mario Andretti and Pete Rose. Some good reading in the works, stay tuned!

tjrubley | Automotive, Online Classifieds Car Show | Friday, October 17th, 2008 | del.icio.us

Well here’s something you don’t see everyday: A true JDM Honda Integra Type-R, and it’s registered! Seller states he’s a factory tech and the car is fresh. Take a look at this 1998 JDM Integra Type-R For Sale on Honda-Tech for $16.5k:

USDM Type-R’s can be seen in this price range pretty regularly, which in my mind, makes this car even more attractive. So you have to learn how to drive with the stick in the left hand — I’ll bet the challenge is worth the reward!

Weekend Wrap-Up: Posts from GermanCarsForSaleBlog and RareSportBikesForSale

I must apologize for the delay, but I’m in Springfield, Missouri this week and the internet at the hotel isn’t stellar. In fact it sucks. And on top of that, I’ve been swamped at work, so there are fewer posts than there have been in previous weeks. I will work harder to make sure I’m better connected on the road in the future.

But without further ado, a summary of posts from other sites I blog on that I hope TjRubley.com readers will enjoy:

{update: Image thumbnails removed due to technical issues. I hate working from the road!!}

Thanks for reading at TjRubley.com and my other sites. Please let me know if there are vehicles or topics that you’d like to see addressed. Leave a comment!

1965 Lotus Elan Vintage Racer For Sale

tjrubley | Automotive, Online Classifieds Car Show | Thursday, October 2nd, 2008 | del.icio.us

George emailed me over the weekend to alert me that his Lotus Elan vintage racer was available for sale. I pointed him to BringATrailer of course as they have a strong standing in the vintage racing community. His car is now listed there as an exclusive:

BaT Exclusive: 1965 Lotus Elan Vintage Racer:

Additional detail on the car from George:

The car is a 1965 Lotus elan “GTS” race car, this is a real vintage race car (meaning it has period race history) The car is configured as a 26R but is not one of the documented factory cars. Has most all of the appropriate and correct homologation pieces that a fully kitted lotus race car would have. The 4 spoke, peg drive, magnesium wheels that the lotus used on the purpose build ( formula cars) alloy drive train ( lotus would substitute magnesium for any piece that was iron, or even aluminum in order to drive the weight down . Engine on the car is the venerable lotus twin cam as pre-prepared by BRM ( same company that was a Formula 1 rival to Lotus in the the 60’s but also an engine supplier and did race engines for the production based cars like the 26R, 47 and Cortina. Cosworth had the contract for the formula and group 4 cars ) to phase 4 spec.

These cars define lightweight sports cars and the racing versions scaled even lighter. 26R’s were often classed with the Shelby Cobra and Ferrari GT’s of the time and in most cases only had to worry about the Cobra’s before being banned from production racing by the SCCA in 66 (I never knew they banned the 26R ,but Dave Bean says they did, the Lotus super seven ban is more widely known about ). The light weight makes these cars accelerate and stop far better than their peers -lotus also have a deserved reputation for being able to make a car go around a corner.

There is a lot of chatter in the comments section of the BaT post regarding the wheels. But it’s great to see all the enthusiasts come together to add their expertise to the mix. One thing they all agree on:

That is one REALLY GOOD LOOKING ELAN and worth every penny of $50k.

That really sums it up doesn’t it?!

Since George contacted me, he has now shot a couple of short videos of the car, including this one with the engine running and blipping the throttle:

Oh what a sound, and I love the side exit for the exhaust!

Thanks for contacting me George, and good luck with your sale!
